Tokyo Koudo Ikusei Academy is a prestigious high school with a 100% college placement rate. Students receive a monthly allowance of 100,000 points, which function as currency. But the school's true nature is a ruthless meritocracy where classes are ranked A through D, with Class D receiving the worst treatment. The story follows Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, a quiet and unassuming student placed in Class D. He hides his extraordinary intelligence and strategic mind, working behind the scenes to manipulate events and help his class climb the ranks.

The anime adaptation, produced by Lerche, first aired in July 2017. It quickly gained a dedicated fanbase for its psychological depth and intricate plotting. The series is based on the light novels by Shougo Kinugasa, which began in 2015. The show's tension comes from special exams that force students into alliances, betrayals, and mind games. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji enters Tokyo Koudo Ikusei Academy with a hidden agenda: he wants the school's system to defeat him, proving his father's brutal philosophy wrong. He is placed in Class 1-D, the dumping ground for students deemed defective. The class includes Suzune Horikita, a cold and ambitious girl who despises being in Class D, and Kei Karuizawa, a popular but fragile girl who leads the class's female clique. Ayanokouji keeps his abilities secret, pretending to be average while subtly orchestrating outcomes.

The school operates on a point system. Students earn or lose points based on behavior, test scores, and performance in special exams. These exams are elaborate psychological games that test cooperation, deception, and strategy. In the first season, Class D faces an island survival test, a written exam with a traitor, and a sports festival. Ayanokouji guides Horikita into taking a leadership role, while he works from the shadows to ensure Class D's survival and eventual promotion to Class C.

Season 2 introduces the ruthless Kakeru Ryuuen from Class C, who becomes a primary antagonist. He targets Class D, trying to expose its weaknesses. The season features a cruise ship exam where classes compete for points, and a cultural festival where Ryuuen attempts to break Karuizawa. Ayanokouji's manipulations become more direct, and his relationship with Karuizawa deepens as he protects her from Ryuuen's schemes. The season ends with Class D successfully fending off Ryuuen's assault and earning promotion to Class C.

Season 3 covers the third term, focusing on a Mixed Training Camp exam. Students are divided into mixed-class groups and must collaborate to achieve a passing score. Groups that fail face expulsion. Ayanokouji must navigate alliances with students from other classes, including the brilliant Arisu Sakayanagi from Class A and the kind Honami Ichinose from Class B. The exam reveals more about the school's hidden rules and the White Room, a mysterious institution from Ayanokouji's past.
