Overview
The zombie apocalypse has been done to death, but Black Summer strips it down to something leaner and meaner. Created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, this Netflix series drops viewers into the first chaotic weeks of a zombie outbreak, following a group of strangers as they navigate a world that has already fallen apart. There are no lengthy explanations or origin stories here. The show throws you into the deep end and expects you to keep up. Jaime King leads the cast as Rose, a mother desperate to reunite with her daughter. Christine Lee plays Kyungsun, a woman with her own survival instincts, and Zoe Marlett appears as Anna, a young girl forced to grow up fast. Across two seasons and 16 episodes, which aired from April 2019 to June 2021, the series tracks these characters through a landscape of panic, violence, and fragile alliances. Each episode runs about 45 minutes, and the show carries a TV-MA rating for good reason: the violence is brutal and the stakes are relentless. Genre-wise, Black Summer blends sci-fi, drama, and action into a survival thriller that owes more to 28 Days Later than to The Walking Dead. The tone is grim and immediate, with a focus on the human capacity for both cruelty and cooperation. Audience reception has been mixed but passionate, earning a 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from over 600 voters. Some critics praised its stripped-down approach and unflinching tension, while others found the character development thin. Either way, it's not a show that holds your hand.
