    Overview

In a near-future Japan where court cases must wrap up in three days, rookie defense attorney Ryuuichi Naruhodou steps into the courtroom for the first time. The Ace Attorney anime, based on Capcom's hit video game series, follows his journey from nervous beginner to a lawyer who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. Each case starts with a crime scene investigation, then builds to a dramatic trial where Naruhodou must poke holes in witness testimony and present the right evidence at the right moment. His signature move: a pointing finger and a shouted "Objection!" that can turn a losing case around.

The series thrives on its eccentric cast. Naruhodou's mentor Chihiro Ayasato guides him through his early cases, but a tragedy early on brings her younger sister Mayoi into his life as an assistant. Mayoi comes from a family of spirit mediums who can channel the dead, adding a supernatural layer to the investigations. Across the bench stands Reiji Mitsurugi, the "Demon Prosecutor" with a perfect win record, whose icy exterior hides a complicated past with Naruhodou. Other prosecutors include the whip-wielding Mei Karuma and the coffee-loving, visor-wearing Godot, each bringing their own theatrical style to the courtroom.

Produced to celebrate the franchise's 15th anniversary, the anime aired on YTV from April 2016 to March 2019, spanning 47 episodes across two seasons. A-1 Pictures handled the first season, while CloverWorks took over for the second, resulting in subtle shifts in animation style. The series adapts cases from the first three video games, though it skips the lengthy "Rise from the Ashes" case from the first game. For fans, the show delivers the iconic moments they love; for newcomers, it offers a wild introduction to a world where the truth always comes out, no matter how absurd the path to get there.

Ryuuichi Naruhodou graduates from law school and immediately lands his first murder case: defending his childhood friend Masashi Yahari, accused of killing his girlfriend. With help from veteran attorney Chihiro Ayasato, Naruhodou wins the case and begins working at her law office. But Chihiro is murdered shortly after, forcing Naruhodou to take over the firm and solve the mystery of her death. He discovers her younger sister Mayoi, a spirit medium in training who can channel the dead, and the two become partners. Mayoi's abilities let them consult with Chihiro from beyond the grave, a resource that proves invaluable in the courtroom.

The first season adapts cases from the first two video games. A theft at a television studio involving a stolen samurai costume leads to a murder charge. A family reunion at a mountain villa turns deadly. A theme park becomes the scene of a locked-room mystery. Each arc runs two to three episodes, balancing investigation segments with courtroom showdowns. Naruhodou faces off against Reiji Mitsurugi, whose flawless record and cold logic make him a formidable opponent. Their rivalry intensifies when Mitsurugi himself becomes a murder suspect, forcing Naruhodou to defend the man who has been his greatest adversary. The season also introduces Detective Keisuke Itonokogiri, a bumbling but good-hearted police detective, and the perpetually confused Judge, who presides over every trial.

Season 2 adapts the third game, Trials and Tribulations, along with the "Lost Turnabout" case skipped from the second game. The cases grow more personal. Naruhodou takes on a case involving a university professor's murder, which connects to his college days. A trip to an island resort uncovers a conspiracy involving a stolen urn and a decades-old crime. The season delves into Naruhodou's childhood, revealing how he met Mitsurugi and the tragic incident that drove them apart. New characters include the mysterious prosecutor Godot, who always drinks coffee and seems to have a personal grudge against Naruhodou, and Dahlia Hawthorne, a spirit medium executed for murder who continues to influence events from the afterlife. The Fey family's spirit medium lineage becomes central, with Mayoi's mother Misty Fey, who disappeared years ago, playing a key role. The season weaves together multiple timelines and interconnected cases, building toward a final confrontation that tests everything Naruhodou has learned.

Throughout both seasons, the series maintains the game's signature blend of logic and absurdity. Witnesses include a parrot who testifies, a magician who fakes his own death, and a killer who uses a giant bell as a murder weapon. But beneath the comedy lies a sincere story about justice, friendship, and the weight of the past. Naruhodou's unwavering belief in his clients, even when all evidence points to their guilt, drives the narrative forward. The anime does not reveal the identity of the mastermind behind the final case or the fates of key characters in the finale.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

The Ace Attorney anime faithfully adapts the beloved video game series, delivering the iconic courtroom drama and quirky characters fans expect. However, pacing issues and inconsistent animation quality keep it from matching the interactive experience of the games. It is a serviceable adaptation that captures the spirit of the source material without transcending it.
