Sense and Sensibility

Jane Austen's debut novel, published anonymously in 1811 under the byline "By A Lady," traces the fortunes of the Dashwood sisters after their father's death. The story, likely set between 1792 and 1797, opens with the Dashwood women driven from their Sussex estate, Norland Park, when the property passes to John Dashwood, their half-brother. His selfish wife Fanny persuades him to provide only minimal financial support, forcing Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters Elinor, Marianne, and young Margaret to accept a cottage on the Devonshire estate of a distant cousin, Sir John Middleton.

Meanwhile, the stoic Colonel Brandon, a friend of Sir John, quietly nurses an affection for Marianne, though she dismisses him as too old and grave.

In London, Marianne is publicly snubbed by Willoughby, who is engaged to a wealthy heiress. Elinor learns that Edward has been secretly engaged for years to Lucy Steele, a manipulative young woman. Both sisters bear their heartbreaks in character: Elinor in silent composure, Marianne in open grief that nearly kills her. After a severe illness, Marianne begins to appreciate Brandon's steady devotion. Edward, freed from his engagement when Lucy marries his brother Robert, proposes to Elinor. Marianne marries Colonel Brandon, finding happiness in a union of respect and genuine affection.
