Justin Tranter moved to New York City after college with a clear vision: to assemble a band that would embody his flamboyant, rock-and-roll aesthetic. This ambition led to the formation of Semi Precious Weapons in New York City in 2006, with Tranter taking on the role of vocalist. The band's distinctive name was inspired by a line from a friend's poem, which described people as "semi-precious weapons." Tranter began recruiting members, first meeting bassist Cole Whittle through mutual friends. Drummer Dan Crean joined soon after, and the original lineup was completed with the recruitment of Aaron Lee Tasjan, whose guitar skills were essential to the band's sound.

With its core members in place, Semi Precious Weapons quickly immersed themselves in the vibrant downtown rock scene of New York City. They earned a reputation for their theatrical live shows and glam-inspired sound, rapidly becoming a staple at venues like The Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. This relentless gigging helped them build a significant local following. However, the original lineup saw a change in November 2008 when Aaron Lee Tasjan departed the band, with Stevy Pyne stepping in as the new guitarist.

The band's growing momentum caught the attention of major labels, leading Semi Precious Weapons to sign with Geffen Records. Their eagerly anticipated debut album, You Love You, was released on September 7, 2010.
