    Overview

In 2019, FromSoftware, the studio behind the challenging Dark Souls series, introduced Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This action-adventure game transports players to a dark fantasy version of 16th-century Japan, a land embroiled in conflict. You step into the armored boots of Wolf, a shinobi on a mission to save his young lord. This quest quickly pulls you into a much larger struggle for the fate of the Ashina clan and the surrounding territories. The game emphasizes precise combat, stealthy infiltration, and exploration, with demanding boss encounters serving as major hurdles.

Developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team, Sekiro marked a departure from their previous work, aiming for a fresh intellectual property inspired by Japanese shinobi tales and the legacy of FromSoftware's own Tenchu series. Released on March 22, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, it later arrived on Google Stadia. Critics largely praised its intricate gameplay mechanics and atmospheric setting, though its renowned difficulty sparked varied reactions among players. Despite some debate over its challenge, the game earned significant accolades, including the Game Award for Game of the Year, and has sold over ten million copies worldwide.

    Gameplay

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice distinguishes itself with a combat system that prioritizes timing, posture management, and deflection over simply depleting an enemy's health bar. Players must learn the rhythm of enemy attacks to successfully parry and break their posture, opening them up for a Deathblow. Unlike the RPG elements found in FromSoftware's Dark Souls series, Sekiro focuses on skill progression through a skill tree and the augmentation of Wolf's prosthetic arm. This Shinobi Prosthetic can be fitted with a variety of tools, such as a shuriken, an axe, or a flamethrower, offering tactical advantages in combat and exploration.

Exploration is encouraged through a highly vertical world design, made accessible by Wolf's grappling hook, which is integrated into his prosthetic arm. This allows for quick traversal across rooftops, rapid retreats, and surprise attacks from above. Stealth mechanics are also a significant component, enabling players to approach encounters strategically, often allowing for an initial stealth Deathblow before engaging directly. A unique resurrection system permits Wolf to revive himself on the spot after defeat, provided he has sufficient resurrection energy, adding a layer of risk and reward to combat encounters.

    Story

The narrative places players in the role of Wolf, a shinobi bound by an oath to protect his young lord, Kuro, the heir to an ancient bloodline. After Kuro is captured by the Ashina clan and his arm severed, Wolf, imbued with a Dragon Heritage, is given a prosthetic arm and the ability to resurrect from death. His primary objective is to rescue Kuro and prevent the clan from exploiting the Dragon's Heritage for their own gain, which could lead to widespread conflict.

Wolf's journey takes him through a war-torn, fictionalized Sengoku-era Japan. Along the way, he encounters various characters and factions, including the Ashina clan, the Interior Ministry, and figures connected to the divine Dragon. The story is more character-focused and linear than previous FromSoftware titles, delving into themes of loyalty, duty, immortality, and the price of power, culminating in multiple possible endings based on the player's choices and actions.
