Colom's record is political and legal rather than celebrity-driven. In 2011 he became the youngest person and first African American to serve as a justice court judge in Lowndes County, a first for the county. He was elected district attorney for the 16th Judicial District in 2015 and has held the office since January 2016. In 2022 President Joe Biden nominated him to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, though the Senate never acted on the nomination. In 2026 he won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi.
