School of the Art Institute of Chicago

What began as a cooperative for art students founded by the Chicago Women's Club in 1866 has grown into one of the nation's most respected private universities. The institution opened its doors that same year to offer professional training when such opportunities were scarce across the United States. Over time, it evolved from a small group effort into a fully accredited degree-granting university, earning accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission in 1936 and joining the National Association of Schools of Art and Design as a charter member in 1944.
