About
Scandinavian Airlines serves as the joint flag carrier for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The airline consolidated operations from three state-owned predecessors, Danish Air Lines, Norwegian Air Lines, and Swedish Air Lines, to create a unified transatlantic network in 1946. Full integration took place by 1951, establishing the company as the largest carrier in Scandinavia with hubs in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.
A major strategic shift occurred in September 2024 when SAS left the Star Alliance to join SkyTeam. This move followed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in October 2023 that led to a new ownership structure. A consortium including Air France–KLM and the Danish government acquired significant stakes, with Air France–KLM increasing its holding to 60.5% by July 2025.
The airline recently placed a record-breaking order for €8.75 billion worth of Airbus aircraft in June 2026 to modernize its fleet. Despite facing operational challenges like hoax bomb threats in late 2026, SAS maintains a strong presence with over 120 destinations and approximately 23.7 million annual passengers.
