James Morgan McGill grew up in Cicero, Illinois, with his older brother Chuck McGill. Their mother favored Jimmy, which bred resentment in Chuck. Jimmy worked as a prosecutor and later as a public defender, but his streak of petty cons earned him the nickname "Slippin' Jimmy." After passing the bar exam, he joined his brother's prestigious firm, Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM), only to be held back by Chuck's lack of faith.
