Santos Laguna

Santos Laguna is a professional football club based in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, and they compete in Liga MX, the highest tier of Mexican football. The club was founded in 1983, and it's quite remarkable that they've managed to stay in the top flight since their promotion in 1988, never having been relegated. That kind of consistency over decades is a real achievement in this sport.

They've enjoyed considerable success domestically, lifting the Liga MX trophy six times. On top of that, they've also won the Copa MX once and the Campeón de Campeones title once. While they've reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions League twice, they haven't quite managed to win that continental title yet, but their presence in those finals shows they can compete on a larger stage.

Santos Laguna's story began in 1983 when a group of investors, including the Mexican Social Security Institute, came together to form a team. They started in the lower divisions and worked their way up. Their promotion to the top flight, Liga MX, in 1988 was a massive moment for the club and the Comarca Lagunera region. It marked the beginning of an era where they would become a consistent presence in Mexican football.

The club's first league title came in the 1996 Verano season, a significant milestone that proved they could compete with the established powers. Over the years, they've added more league championships to their tally, including victories in the 2001 Verano, 2008 Clausura, 2012 Clausura, 2015 Apertura, and 2018 Clausura. This success has cemented their status as one of Mexico's important clubs.

Beyond the league titles, Santos Laguna also secured a Copa MX in 2014 and a Campeón de Campeones in the same year, completing a domestic double. Their journey in international club competitions like the CONCACAF Champions League has seen them reach the final twice, in 2013 and 2021, though victory in that tournament has remained elusive.
