San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks are a professional ice hockey team based in San Jose, California, competing in the National Hockey League's Pacific Division. Founded in 1990, they began play in the 1991-92 season, filling a void left by the California Golden Seals' departure in 1976. The team initially skated at the Cow Palace before moving to their current home, SAP Center, nicknamed "the Shark Tank," in 1993. Owned by San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises, the Sharks have made one Stanley Cup Final appearance, losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016, and won the Presidents' Trophy in 2008-09 for the league's best regular-season record. They've also captured six division titles since 1993. The franchise is known for its passionate fan base and distinctive teal jerseys, and they maintain affiliations with the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL and the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL.

Now in the midst of a rebuild, the Sharks are building around 2024 first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini, who signed a record-breaking five-year, $94 million extension in 2026. The team also re-signed forward Collin Graf to a three-year deal and traded for defenseman Darnell Nurse. The Sharks joined the NHL in 1991 after the Bay Area had been without a team since the California Golden Seals left in 1976. Their early years at the Cow Palace were rough, but the move to SAP Center in 1993 sparked a turnaround. By the late 1990s, with stars like Owen Nolan and Jeff Friesen, they became playoff regulars.

The 2000s brought the Thornton-Marleau era. Joe Thornton arrived in a 2005 trade and immediately won the Hart Trophy. The Sharks consistently made deep runs but couldn't get past the Western Conference Final until 2016, when they finally reached the Stanley Cup Final, only to lose to the Penguins in six games.

That core aged, and by the late 2010s the team slipped. A full rebuild began with the 2020 draft, and the selection of Macklin Celebrini in 2024 signaled a new chapter. With young talent and savvy trades, the Sharks are working their way back to contention. [edit]
