The cathedral was commissioned by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise in 1037, at the height of Kyivan Rus' power. Built to commemorate Yaroslav's victory over the Pechenegs, it was designed to establish Kyiv as the "new Constantinople," the capital of a Christian principality evangelized after the baptism of Rus' in 988. The name deliberately echoes the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, reflecting the close religious and cultural ties between Kyivan Rus' and the Byzantine Empire. It is the oldest preserved stone Christian temple in Eastern Europe.

For centuries, the cathedral served as the center of religious and political life. Its walls witnessed the consecration of princes and metropolitans, receptions of distinguished guests, and the signing of important political agreements. The first library in Kyivan Rus' was founded within its walls, chronicles were kept there, and books were translated. The square in front of the cathedral was the site of popular assemblies for many years.
