SAG Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, now officially called the Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA, are one of Hollywood's most prestigious honors. Founded in 1995 by the Screen Actors Guild, the ceremony recognizes outstanding performances in film and primetime television, with winners chosen by the union's acting membership rather than by critics or industry insiders. This peer-voted nature gives the awards a unique credibility among performers.

The statuette, simply called "the Actor," depicts a male figure holding a mask of comedy and tragedy. The ceremony originally aired on NBC from Universal Studios' Stage 12, then moved to the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, where it has been held for most of its run. In 2024, the show made a historic shift to stream live globally on Netflix, reaching a far wider international audience. That move prompted the 2025 rebranding to the Actor Awards, since the acronym SAG meant little to viewers outside the United States.

What sets the Actor Awards apart is their focus on ensemble achievement. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category is often seen as the ceremony's top prize, and winners frequently go on to take the Best Picture Oscar. The event also awards individual acting honors across film and television, plus a lifetime achievement tribute called the SAG Life Achievement Award. The Screen Actors Guild was founded on July 12, 1933, during the Great Depression, as a labor union to protect actors from exploitative studio contracts. For decades, the union focused on collective bargaining and working conditions. In the early 1990s, SAG president Barry Gordon spearheaded the idea of a peer-voted awards show. Gordon argued that actors deserved a forum where their colleagues could honor outstanding work, free from the influence of studio marketing or critical consensus.

The first SAG Awards ceremony took place on February 25, 1995, at Universal Studios' Stage 12. The show aired live on NBC and featured categories for both film and television. Winners were selected by the union's 77,615 members at the time. The second ceremony moved to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, and by the third year the event settled at the Shrine Auditorium, where it remained for most of its run. In 2012, the Screen Actors Guild merged with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists to form SAG-AFTRA, which now governs the awards.

A major turning point came in 2024 when the ceremony struck a multi-year deal with Netflix to stream live globally. The 31st and final show under the SAG Awards name aired in February 2025. In November 2025, SAG-AFTRA announced the official rebrand to the Actor Awards, effective with the 32nd ceremony in March 2026. The SAG Awards have become a reliable bellwether for the Oscars. Historically, the winner of the ensemble cast award has gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar roughly 70% of the time. This predictive power makes the ceremony a key stop on the awards-season circuit. In 2017, the SAG Awards faced criticism for the lack of diversity among nominees, particularly in the film categories. Another minor controversy arose in 2024 when the ceremony moved exclusively to Netflix, leading some traditional viewers to complain about the streaming-only format.
