Safiye Soyman

Safiye Soyman's record is not measured in trophies. It is measured in decades: a gazino apprenticeship in Istanbul, a catalog of albums and singles that has been collected and reissued on streaming platforms, and a second act on Dünya Güzellerim that made her a household face well beyond the folk-music circuit. She built her reputation on clear diction and emotional control, and she has kept working into her sixties, recording, performing and posting. For a certain generation of Turkish viewers, she is simply part of the furniture of their television lives, which is its own kind of distinction.
