    About

The SA20, officially the Betway SA20, is a professional Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in South Africa. Launched in 2023, it replaced the Mzansi Super League as the country's flagship T20 competition. The league features six city-based franchises, each owned by an Indian Premier League team. The tournament runs from January to February, with a group stage followed by playoffs and a final. A key rule mandates every squad to include at least one Under-23 player, creating a clear pathway for young talent. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have dominated early editions, winning three of the first four titles. MI Cape Town claimed the third season. The SA20 has quickly become a major event in the global cricket calendar, drawing top international stars and record crowds.

    History

Cricket South Africa launched the SA20 in 2022 through a new entity, Africa Cricket Development (Pty) Limited. CSA holds 50% of ACD, broadcaster SuperSport owns 30%, and former IPL Chief Operating Officer Sundar Raman holds the remaining 20%. The league was created to revitalize domestic T20 cricket after the Mzansi Super League folded following just two seasons, its 2020 and 2021 editions canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2022, CSA controversially canceled a One Day International series against Australia scheduled for January 2023 to clear the calendar for the SA20. Graeme Smith was appointed league commissioner in August 2022. The six franchise teams were sold to IPL owners: the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals. The inaugural season kicked off on January 10, 2023, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeating Pretoria Capitals in the final.

    Cultural Impact

The SA20 has revitalized interest in domestic cricket in South Africa, drawing large crowds and strong television ratings. The league's mandate to include Under-23 players has accelerated the development of young talent like Nqobani Mokoena, who earned a national call-up after his debut season. The tournament has also boosted local economies in host cities, with sold-out matches bringing tourism and business. By partnering with IPL franchises, the SA20 has strengthened ties between South African and Indian cricket, creating a pipeline for players and coaching staff. The league's success has inspired other nations to explore similar franchise models, reinforcing the global trend of T20 leagues.

    Controversies

The SA20 has faced some criticism over its scheduling. In July 2022, Cricket South Africa canceled a bilateral ODI series against Australia to make room for the league, drawing backlash from traditionalists who felt it prioritized franchise cricket over international commitments. Some local fans also expressed concern that the league's heavy IPL influence, all six teams are owned by IPL franchises, could overshadow South African cricket identity. There have been minor disputes over player availability, with some international stars opting out of early seasons due to prior commitments.
