Rue Bennett was born with a cocktail of mental health conditions: attention deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and possible bipolar disorder. At age eleven, a severe anxiety attack landed her in the hospital, where she received Valium for the first time. That moment, she later says, was the first time she felt safe in her own head. When her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Rue began stealing his prescription medication to cope. After his death, her use spiraled. She attempts to escape but is caught and forced into servitude under a pimp named Alamo Brown, who ultimately kills her.
