Overview
Origin Story
Rudeus Greyrat was born to Paul Greyrat, a former adventurer, and Zenith Greyrat, a priestess, in the village of Buina on the Asura continent. But his soul carries the memories of a 34-year-old Japanese hikikomori who died after pushing a teenager out of a truck's path. Reborn with full recollection of his past life, he vows to live without regret. At age two, he begins magic training under his mother, mastering basic spells within a year. By three, he invents the Stone Cannon spell, a feat that astonishes local mages. A magical tome left by Paul further accelerates his education, and he spends his early childhood reading, practicing, and exploring the woods near his home.
Personality
Rudeus is a bundle of contradictions. He carries deep shame and anxiety from his past life as a NEET, which manifests as social awkwardness and a desperate need for approval. He is highly intelligent and diligent when focused, but his perverted tendencies, lingering from his former life, often lead him into inappropriate situations, especially with underage girls. Over time, he develops genuine empathy and a strong sense of responsibility toward his family and friends. He is fiercely protective of those he loves, willing to risk his life for them. His inner monologue is sardonic and self-deprecating, revealing a man constantly wrestling with his better and worst impulses.
Story Arc
Rudeus's journey spans seven decades. In childhood, he befriends Sylphiette and suffers false accusations that deepen his social anxiety. The Displacement Incident at age ten teleports him to the Demon Continent, where he travels with Roxy and Ruijerd, honing combat skills. He reunites with Sylphie and marries her, then attends Ranoa University, meeting Eris and Roxy. He becomes a father, loses his father Paul in battle, and confronts the demon god Laplace. In his final decades, he leads a war against Laplace using knowledge from his past life. He dies peacefully at 74, surrounded by his wives and children, having achieved a fulfilling life.

Reception & Legacy
Rudeus Greyrat is one of the most polarizing protagonists in modern isekai. The series has sold over 13 million copies worldwide as of 2024, and the anime's production values at Studio Bind have drawn widespread praise. However, Rudeus's early behavior, groping Sylphie as a child, his attraction to underage girls, has sparked heated debate. Some viewers see his arc as a genuine redemption story about overcoming trauma and selfishness. Others argue that his past-life memories make his actions predatory, not redeemable. On fan forums, he is frequently discussed as both a well-written character and a problematic figure. Despite the controversy, he ranks 80th in popularity by type on Wikidata and remains a central figure in the isekai genre.
