Royale Union Saint-Gilloise

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, commonly known as Union SG, is a Belgian professional football club based in the Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles. Founded on November 1, 1897, the club is one of the oldest in Belgium and enjoyed a golden era in the early 20th century, winning 11 Belgian top-flight titles between 1904 and 1935. During that period, they set a world record of 60 consecutive league matches without defeat from 1932 to 1935, a streak that remains a Belgian record. After World War II, the club declined and eventually fell into the lower divisions, spending 48 years away from the top flight.

In 2018, British businessman Tony Bloom, owner of Brighton & Hove Albion, acquired Union SG and implemented a data-driven recruitment model. The club won promotion back to the Belgian Pro League in 2021 and immediately finished second in their first season, qualifying for European competition. They won the Belgian Cup in 2024 and reached the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in 2023. Union Saint-Gilloise was founded on November 1, 1897, and quickly became a dominant force in Belgian football. They won their first league title in 1903–04 and went on to claim ten more before 1935. The 1932–33 season was particularly remarkable: Union went unbeaten in the league, finishing with a 23-3-0 record, and extended their unbeaten run to 60 matches over three seasons. This streak stood as a world record for decades. The club also won the Belgian Cup three times in the 1910s.

After World War II, Union struggled to maintain their success. They were relegated from the top division in 1949 and bounced between the first and second divisions for several decades. By the 1970s, they had fallen to the third tier. Financial difficulties and declining attendance marked the next 40 years. The club's lowest point came in 2014 when they were nearly dissolved but were saved by a group of supporters.

The turnaround began in 2018 when Tony Bloom purchased the club. With investment and a focus on analytics, Union signed undervalued players and developed a young squad. In 2020–21, they won the Belgian First Division B title and returned to the Pro League. Under coach Felice Mazzù, they finished second in the regular season in 2021–22, a historic achievement for a promoted team. The next season, under Karel Geraerts, they won the Belgian Cup and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.
