Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble is an annual professional wrestling event produced by WWE, traditionally held in late January. First staged on January 24, 1988, at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, it has grown into one of the promotion's five biggest shows, alongside WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank. The event's centerpiece is the Royal Rumble match, a modified battle royal invented by WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson. Patterson tested the concept at a house show in October 1987 before the first televised version aired on the USA Network.

The match begins with two wrestlers in the ring, with additional participants entering at timed intervals, standardized to every 90 seconds in recent years. Eliminations occur when a wrestler is thrown over the top rope and both feet touch the floor, a rule introduced in 1995. The last person remaining wins. Since 1991, the winner has traditionally earned a championship match at WrestleMania, WWE's flagship event. The 2018 event also introduced the women's Royal Rumble match, headlined by Asuka's victory.

Over the decades, the event has evolved from a one-hour special into a multi-hour spectacle with multiple championship matches and surprise returns. The 2020 and 2021 editions had no live audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with WWE using virtual fan screens.
