Roronoa Zoro was born in the East Blue to Tera and Roronoa Arashi, a descendant of the Shimotsuki Family. At a young age, he began training at the Isshin Dojo in Shimotsuki Village, where he met Kuina, the dojo master's daughter. Despite his relentless efforts, Zoro lost to Kuina every time they sparred, tallying over 2,000 defeats. After their final match, they made a vow that one of them would become the world's greatest swordsman. However, Kuina died the following day from a fall down the stairs. Heartbroken, Zoro asked for her sword, the Wado Ichimonji, and pledged to fulfill their promise by becoming the strongest swordsman in the world.

Before joining the Straw Hats, Zoro worked as a bounty hunter in the East Blue alongside Johnny and Yosaku, earning the moniker "Pirate Hunter Zoro."
