Overview
Koichi Kawato arrives at Oarai High School in 1998 with a broken past and a job offer he cannot refuse. The former minor league player turned homeroom teacher finds himself leading a class of delinquents who have no respect for authority or education. Their captain, Takumi Inoue, is volatile and aggressive, setting a hostile tone from the moment Kawato steps onto campus.
Instead of enforcing discipline through punishment, Kawato discovers a shared passion for baseball hidden beneath the students' rough exteriors. He organizes a makeshift team and begins training them not just to play the game but to understand teamwork and resilience. The narrative tracks their relentless journey toward qualifying for the prestigious Koshien Spring National High School Baseball Tournament while exploring themes of redemption and personal growth.
The series ran in Weekly Young Jump from August 1998 to May 2003 and was collected into 35 volumes. It stands as Masanori Morita's most significant work, earning the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Excellence Award in 2004. The story has been adapted into a live-action film in 2008 starring Tatsuya Fujiwara and a two-season television drama on TBS featuring Yūki Amami.
