David Burke, performing as D4vd, recorded "Romantic Homicide" inside his sister's closet on July 13, 2022. He uploaded the track to streaming services via DistroKid three days later. The song blends bedroom pop and lo-fi elements with raw vocal delivery, featuring samples from Bedroom's "In My Head" and Astha's "Eu Sei, Eu Sei." Dan Darmawan produced the track alongside the artist.

Viral traction arrived in September 2022 when users posted over 245,000 clips of the song on TikTok. This momentum pushed the single onto the Billboard Hot 100, where it debuted at number 77 before peaking at number 33 in October. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the track Gold in November 2022. It subsequently appeared as the second track on his debut EP Petals to Thorns released in 2023.

A music video directed by Tommy Kiljoy premiered on September 7, 2022. The visual narrative draws from film noir and anime aesthetics, introducing an alter ego named Itami. By late 2025, the video had accumulated more than 215 million views on YouTube. The song re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 38 in September 2025 following a surge in streams linked to criminal investigations involving the artist. [edit]
