About
David Baszucki and Erik Cassel founded Roblox Corporation in 2004, two years before the platform's public launch. The company's roots stretch back to Baszucki's earlier venture, Knowledge Revolution, which made educational simulation software like Interactive Physics. MSC Software bought that company for $20 million in 1998. After a stint as a vice president and then an angel investor, Baszucki teamed up with Cassel to build what they initially called DynaBlocks.
Roblox went live on September 1, 2006. For its first decade, growth was steady but unspectacular. Then between 2016 and 2019, daily active users jumped from 9 million to 90 million, a tenfold increase. The pandemic pushed numbers even higher: players spent 30.6 billion hours on the app in 2020, up 124 percent from the year before. Revenue hit $923.9 million in 2020, an 82 percent surge. By February 2025, the platform averaged 85.3 million daily active users, with half of all American children under 16 playing each month.
Roblox Corporation went public on March 10, 2021 through a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RBLX. Shares opened at $64.50, giving the company a $42 billion valuation. That number surpassed Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive at the time. The company reported $3.60 billion in revenue for fiscal 2024, though it posted a net loss of $935 million. As of late 2024, it had 2,474 employees.
The company operates a two-sided marketplace. Creators use Roblox Studio to build experiences and sell virtual items. Players buy Robux, the platform's currency. Roblox handles identity, moderation, discovery, hosting, and payments, then shares revenue with creators. The platform runs on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Xbox One, Meta Quest headsets, and PlayStation consoles. In 2021, Roblox acquired Guilded, a communication platform for gamers. The company's dual-class share structure gives Class B shares super-voting power, keeping control with Baszucki and early investors.
