About
Robert Carlyle was born in Glasgow on 14 April 1961 and grew up in the city's Maryhill district. He came to acting relatively late, training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama after a stint in his father's painting and decorating business. That grounding in working-class Glasgow life would later give his screen performances their particular charge. His breakthrough came on television as the title character in Hamish Macbeth, a Highland constable comedy-drama that ran from 1995 to 1998. The role that made him a fixture of British cinema arrived the following year, when he played the volatile Begbie in Danny Boyle's Trainspotting. A year later he won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role as Gaz, the unemployed Sheffield steelworker who organizes a male striptease troupe in The Full Monty. The two roles showed his range: menace in one, hangdog charm in the other. Hollywood came calling at the end of the 1990s. Carlyle played a cannibalistic frontiersman in Ravenous and the villain Renard in the Bond film The World Is Not Enough, both in 1999. He followed those with There's Only One Jimmy Grimble and The Beach in 2000, The 51st State in 2001, Eragon in 2006, and the zombie sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007. In 2015 he directed and starred in The Legend of Barney Thomson, a dark Glasgow comedy about a barber who becomes a serial killer. Television has stayed central to his career. He earned an Emmy nomination for the 2005 miniseries Human Trafficking and drew praise as King James VI and I in the BBC's Gunpowder, Treason & Plot in 2004. He played Dr. Nicholas Rush across Stargate Universe from 2009 to 2011, a role that won him a Gemini Award, and spent seven seasons as Rumpelstiltskin on Once Upon a Time from 2011 to 2018. More recently he led the political drama COBRA from 2020 to 2023. Across more than 60 film and television credits, he has moved between Scottish social realism, blockbuster franchises, and American network fantasy without losing the intensity that first set him apart.
