Rise of Empires: Ottoman

Netflix's Rise of Empires: Ottoman is the rare history lesson that plays like a thriller, mixing dramatic reenactments with talking-head analysis to chart one of the most consequential sieges in world history. The series pairs Turkish actor Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu as Sultan Mehmed II, the 21-year-old ruler obsessed with taking Constantinople, against a Byzantine capital that had stood for a thousand years. Charles Dance narrates with the same gravitas he brought to Game of Thrones, and it works better than it has any right to.
