About
Richard Hawtin arrived in Banbury on June 4, 1970, before moving to Canada where he would eventually redefine electronic music. This British-Canadian producer and DJ emerged during the early 1990s as a central figure in the second wave of Detroit techno. By the mid-1990s, he had established himself as a primary voice for minimal techno, stripping the genre down to its rawest elements while maintaining intense rhythmic precision. His work under the aliases Plastikman and F.U.S.E. remains essential listening for fans of the style. Hawtin co-founded the influential Plus 8 record label with John Acquaviva in May 1990. The name came directly from the pitch adjustment function on their turntables, reflecting his hands-on approach to sound engineering. Under the F.U.S.E. moniker, he released Dimension Intrusion in 1993, an album that joined Warp Records' prestigious Artificial Intelligence series. Later, he launched M-nus Records in 1998 to further explore his sonic boundaries. His career extended beyond the studio into massive live events, including the weekly ENTER. Ibiza party at Space from 2012 to 2015. Innovation remained a constant theme throughout his career. He founded PLAYdifferently in 2016 to bridge the gap between music technology and performance. That same year, he introduced the MODEL 1 mixer, a hardware device he co-designed with Andy Rigby-Jones that allowed DJs unprecedented control over their mixes. This blend of creative output and technical invention has kept him relevant for decades without relying on nostalgia.
