Richard Thornburg

Richard Thornburg is a television news reporter created for the 1988 film Die Hard, adapted from Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever. He does not appear in the original novel. Screenwriter Steven E. de Souza invented the character to add a media critique subplot and provide scenes when protagonist John McClane is off-screen. Thornburg works for a Los Angeles news station and is introduced during the Nakatomi Plaza hostage crisis, where he immediately prioritizes sensationalism over accuracy or safety. [edit]

Thornburg's actions directly escalate the conflict in Die Hard. He interviews Holly McClane's children on live television, revealing that John McClane is Holly's husband. Terrorist leader Hans Gruber sees this broadcast and uses the information to manipulate Holly and gain leverage over McClane. Later, as Holly is evacuated, Thornburg shoves a microphone in her face and asks callous questions. Holly punches him, providing a moment of catharsis.
