Reuters is a British international news agency and one of the largest and most respected news organizations in the world, owned by the information and media conglomerate Thomson Reuters. Established in London in October 1851 by Paul Reuter, a German-born entrepreneur who pioneered the rapid transmission of news using telegraphy, the agency grew over more than a century and a half into a global powerhouse of journalism. Reuter initially set up a Submarine Telegraph office to transmit stock market quotations between London and Paris, and a landmark moment came in 1865 when Reuters was the first organization to report the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.
