Reiner Braun was born in the Liberio Internment Zone in Marley, an Eldian living as a second-class citizen under Marleyan oppression. At a young age, he was selected as a candidate to inherit one of the Nine Titans. After his older brother was killed in an accident, Reiner felt pressured to succeed to give his family a better life. He was chosen to inherit the Armored Titan and, along with Bertholdt Hoover, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliard, was sent to Paradis Island in 845 on a mission to reclaim the Founding Titan. To infiltrate, he breached Wall Maria as the Armored Titan, directly causing the fall of the wall and the death of countless people, including Eren Yeager's mother.
