Founded in 2005 by University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, with Aaron Swartz joining later, Reddit was acquired by Condé Nast in 2006 and later spun off as an independent subsidiary. It went public in March 2024 under the ticker RDDT, reaching a market cap of $10 billion by July 2024. As of December 2024, it ranks among the most visited websites globally, with over half its traffic from the United States. A significant data licensing agreement with Google, valued at roughly $60 million per year, was signed in early 2024 to train AI models on Reddit content.
