    Overview

What happens when a vending machine enthusiast dies and gets reincarnated as exactly that? That's the premise of Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon, a Japanese light novel series by Hirukuma. The story follows an unnamed protagonist who, after being crushed by a falling vending machine, wakes up as a sentient, coin-operated machine in a fantasy dungeon. He can't move on his own, but he can stock and dispense items, talk, and even level up. His life changes when he meets Lammis, a young hunter who hauls him around on her back and gives him the name Boxxo. Together, they navigate the dungeon's dangers, with Boxxo's inventory and vending abilities providing unexpected advantages.

The series began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in March 2016 before Kadokawa Shoten picked it up for print in July 2016 under their Sneaker Bunko imprint. The original illustrations are by Itsuwa Kato, with Yūki Hagure handling the revised edition. The light novel runs around 200 pages per volume. A manga adaptation by Kunieda launched in Dengeki Daioh in August 2021, and both the light novel and manga are licensed in English by Yen Press. An anime adaptation by Studio Gokumi and AXsiZ aired its first season from July to September 2023, a second season from July to September 2025, and a third and final season from April to June 2026.

Critics have praised the series for its inventive twist on the isekai genre. Instead of the usual swords and magic, the protagonist relies on snack distribution, cold drinks, and the occasional healing item. It's a lighthearted, comedic take that explores what it means to be useful in a world where you're literally a machine. The series has achieved a level of cult status, frequently cited in discussions of the weirdest isekai premises, and its popularity on Shōsetsuka ni Narō and subsequent adaptations mark it as a commercially notable title within Kadokawa's Sneaker Bunko lineup.
