The club's roots go back to 1897 when a group of students from the Institución Libre de Enseñanza formed the Foot-Ball Club Sky. On March 6, 1902, the Padrós brothers formalized the club as Madrid Football Club, with Juan Padrós as its first president and just five initial members. The club's first kit was all white with blue socks and caps, inspired by the London Corinthians, and a purple embroidered coat of arms. Englishman Arthur Johnson became the first manager, leading the team to its first Copa del Rey win in 1905.

In 1920, King Alfonso XIII granted the club the royal title "Real," adding a crown to the emblem. The club moved to the Estadio de Chamartín in 1923, but it was soon outgrown. In 1944, construction began on a new stadium, which opened in 1947 as the Nuevo Estadio Chamartín.
