    Overview

Days after the events of Ready Player One, Wade Watts is the richest person on Earth and the owner of the OASIS, the sprawling virtual reality universe that has become humanity's primary escape. But his victory comes with a strange inheritance: the ONI, a headset that can record and play back real human sensory experiences. When Wade and his friends discover that the late James Halliday left behind one last puzzle, they are drawn into a new quest that forces them to confront the dark side of immersive technology. Cline weaves a cautionary tale about addiction, surveillance, and the terrifying possibility of uploading a human mind into a digital afterlife.

The novel was published by Ballantine Books on November 24, 2020, running 384 pages in its hardcover edition. The audiobook, released by Penguin Random House Audio, is narrated by Wil Wheaton, who also voiced the first book. Ready Player Two landed at number one on The New York Times Combined Print & E-Book Fiction list, but critics were far less kind than they were to its predecessor. Many praised the imaginative virtual settings and pulse-pounding action sequences, but they found the characterization thin, the prose clunky, and the pop-culture references overwhelming. Some also argued that the plot too closely mirrored the first novel's structure, making it feel like a retread rather than a fresh adventure.

A film adaptation is reportedly in development, with Steven Spielberg attached as a producer. In August 2025, Spielberg revealed the project is in its discovery phase. Screenwriter Zak Penn, who co-wrote the first film with Cline, confirmed in August 2026 that he is currently writing the script, breaking years of silence. Additionally, Ten Speed Graphic plans to adapt both Ready Player One and Ready Player Two into graphic novels, with the first volume set for release in October 2026.
