RC Celta de Vigo

Real Club Celta de Vigo, known simply as Celta, is a Spanish football club based in the coastal city of Vigo, Galicia. The team competes in La Liga, Spain's top flight, and plays its home matches at Balaídos, a stadium that holds just under 25,000 fans. The club's nickname, Os Celestes, comes from their sky-blue shirts, a color that echoes the Celtic heritage of the region. Founded on August 23, 1923, through the merger of Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna, Celta's name pays tribute to the Celtic peoples who once inhabited Galicia.

Celta have carved out a reputation as a competitive side in Spanish football, though major silverware has remained elusive. They have never won the league title or the Copa del Rey, but they have reached the cup final three times, most recently in 2001. Their best league finish came in 2002-03, when they ended fourth and qualified for the Champions League, where they reached the round of 16 before falling to Arsenal. In 2016-17, they made a memorable run to the Europa League semi-finals, losing to Manchester United. The club also shared the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000.

Celta's origins trace to the 1923 merger of Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna, a union forged to give Vigo a club strong enough to compete at the national level. The name Celta was chosen to reflect the Celtic roots of Galicia, and the sky-blue kit was adopted as a nod to that heritage. The club spent its early decades bouncing between the top two divisions, with the first golden era arriving in the late 1940s when they finished as league runners-up in 1947-48, their best result until the 2002-03 fourth-place finish.

The 1990s brought a renaissance under coach Javier Irureta, who led the team to a fifth-place finish in 1997-98 and a spot in the UEFA Cup. That campaign included a famous 4-1 home victory over Liverpool at Balaídos. The following season, Celta reached the quarter-finals of the same competition, losing to Marseille on away goals. In 2000, they shared the UEFA Intertoto Cup, which earned them a place in the UEFA Cup, where they advanced to the round of 16.

The 2002-03 season saw Celta reach the Champions League group stage for the first time. They finished second in their group behind Ajax, then eliminated Arsenal in the round of 16 with a 3-2 aggregate win, capped by a 1-0 victory at Highbury. Their run ended in the quarter-finals against Milan, losing 3-2 on aggregate. The following season, however, the club was relegated from La Liga, a sharp decline that saw many key players leave.

Celta returned to the top flight in 2005 and have remained there since, with occasional relegation scares. In 2016-17, under coach Eduardo Berizzo, the team reached the Europa League semi-finals, defeating Ajax, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Genk along the way. They lost to Manchester United 2-1 on aggregate. Since then, Celta have stabilised as a mid-table La Liga side, with a brief Europa League group-stage appearance in 2025-26, where they beat PAOK 3-1 at home in October 2025. [edit]
