On February 22, 1998, Madonna released her seventh studio album, Ray of Light, and the pop landscape shifted. The record arrived after the birth of her first child, Lourdes, and her deep dive into Kabbalah, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Ashtanga yoga. Out went the overt sexuality of Erotica, replaced by a searching, spiritual tone. Working primarily with producer William Orbit, Madonna wove together electronica, trip hop, and synth-pop, crafting a sound that felt both futuristic and intimate. Critics praised Madonna's reinvention and mature vocals, and the album earned four Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Album.
