Rate Your Music launched on Christmas Eve 2000, the creation of Seattle developer Hossein Sharifi. What began as a personal project became one of the internet's most comprehensive music and film databases. The platform lets users catalog their collections, rate releases on a 0.5 to 5.0 star scale, write reviews, and tag genres through a community-driven taxonomy. Its weighted rating algorithm adjusts for user activity patterns, aiming to surface the opinions of engaged members rather than casual visitors.

By June 2026, the site had logged over 1.5 million registered accounts, 7.3 million releases, 173 million ratings, and 3.7 million reviews. Film cataloging arrived in 2009, extending RYM's scope beyond music. Users can create custom lists, vote on genre tags, and participate in multilingual discussion forums. The interface has drawn criticism for its dated design and inconsistent visual cues, but the depth of metadata and community curation keeps enthusiasts coming back.

RYM operates under the Sonemic network, with Sharifi still active as lead developer. The site is free for basic use, with registration required for cataloging and community features. Revenue comes from advertisements. While no native mobile app exists, the web platform remains a primary destination for music discovery, often cited alongside Album of the Year and Discogs as a key resource for dedicated listeners.
