Ranking of Kings

Sōsuke Tōka created Ranking of Kings, a web manga that launched in May 2017 on the Echoes Manga Hack platform. The series grew into a massive hit, eventually collecting 23 tankōbon volumes published by Enterbrain. This fantasy tale centers on Bojji, a deaf prince born with tiny limbs who struggles to be taken seriously by his kingdom. His journey takes a turn when he meets Kage, a silent survivor from a destroyed assassin clan. Despite their different backgrounds and communication barriers, the two form an unbreakable bond as they navigate a world obsessed with strength rankings.

The narrative unfolds in a realm where a ruler's worth is measured strictly by physical power and heroic feats. Prince Bojji faces immediate prejudice from the court and his father because his disabilities render him unfit for kingship in their eyes. He possesses an unyielding optimism and a desire to help others, traits that contrast sharply with the harsh realities of his environment. The story balances whimsical comedy with moments of intense emotional depth and dark fantasy elements, challenging societal norms regarding power and disability.

Kage serves as the silent partner in this adventure, a boy who cannot speak but communicates through gestures and shared experiences. Together they travel across the kingdom, encountering various allies and enemies who test their resolve. The plot explores themes of empathy, kindness, and resilience, arguing that true greatness lies in one's character rather than martial ability. Critics have praised the work for its unique blend of heartwarming storytelling and sudden shifts into darker territory, noting how it deconstructs traditional hero tropes. [edit]
