    Overview

    Origin Story

Rand al'Thor was born on the slopes of Dragonmount during the Aiel War, the son of Janduin, a clan chief of the Taardad Aiel, and Shaiel, an Aiel woman who was actually Tigraine, the former Daughter-Heir of Andor. His mother died in childbirth, and his father fell in battle shortly after. The infant Rand was found by Tam al'Thor, a soldier from the Two Rivers, and his wife Kari, who adopted him and raised him as their own in the isolated village of Emond's Field. Growing up as a shepherd, Rand knew nothing of his heritage until the arrival of Moiraine Damodred, an Aes Sedai, who fled with him and his friends after an attack by Trollocs and the Forsaken Ba'alzamon.

    Personality

Rand begins as a humble, dutiful, and somewhat stubborn young man, deeply loyal to his friends and family. As he accepts his identity as the Dragon Reborn, he becomes increasingly burdened by responsibility, developing a hard, commanding demeanor. The taint on saidin exacerbates his paranoia and anger, leading to a period of cold ruthlessness. Ultimately, after his epiphany on Dragonmount, he regains his humanity, embracing compassion and humility. He is defined by a strong sense of duty, a willingness to sacrifice himself, and a deep, often hidden, capacity for love.

    Story Arc

Rand's journey spans fourteen books. In The Eye of the World, he flees the Two Rivers and unknowingly channels at the Eye, defeating Ba'alzamon. In The Great Hunt, he learns of his heritage and proclaims himself the Dragon Reborn. Over subsequent books, he conquers nations, battles the Forsaken, and struggles with the taint on saidin, which drives him toward madness. In Lord of Chaos, he survives the Battle of Dumai's Wells, where he is captured and tortured by the White Tower. In The Gathering Storm, he reaches a low point on Dragonmount, where he accepts his own mortality and resolves to fight for life. In the final book, A Memory of Light, he seals the Dark One away, losing his hand and his ability to channel, then chooses to walk away from power to live anonymously as a farmer.
