Ramírez was born as Tak-Ne in ancient Egypt, centuries before the rise of recorded history. He became an immortal, unable to die unless beheaded, due to an energy force called the Quickening. Over millennia, he traveled the world, mastering swordsmanship and accumulating deep knowledge of the immortal condition. He adopted the name Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez and became known as the Spaniard, though his origins were Egyptian. In the original film, he served as mentor to Connor MacLeod, teaching him the ways of the Game — the eternal battle among immortals until only one remains to claim the Prize.

Different media have revised his origin. In Highlander II: The Quickening, he was initially depicted as a sorcerer from the planet Zeist exiled to Earth, though the director's cut restored his Earth-born immortal origin.
