Rainbow Kitten Surprise began its journey in 2013, rooted in Boone, North Carolina. It was there, at Appalachian State University, that Ela Melo and Darrick Keller first met and started collaborating on music in a shared dorm room. With a basic recording setup, they captured their initial songs, laying the foundation for what would become their debut EP, Mary, featuring their debut song of the same name. The band's memorable name itself has an unusual origin: it was suggested by a friend who, while recovering from a serious illness and still under the influence of morphine, offered the whimsical phrase "Rainbow Kitten Surprise," which ultimately stuck.

Realizing the need for a fuller sound beyond their duo, Melo and Keller expanded the group. They recruited Ethan Goodpaster, Jess Haney, and Charlie Holt from the vibrant music scene at Appalachian State University. Conveniently, all three new members lived in the same dorm as Melo and Keller during their freshman year, simplifying rehearsals. On November 11, 2013, the band independently released their first full-length album, Seven, through Split Rail Records, the student-run label associated with Appalachian State's Hayes School of Music. This album was later re-released, bundled with the earlier Mary EP, as Seven + Mary.

In their early days, Rainbow Kitten Surprise built a grassroots following by playing local shows around Boone.
