Racing Club

Racing Club, based in Avellaneda, Argentina, is one of the country's most storied sports institutions. Founded on March 25, 1903, the club is best known for its football team, which competes in the Argentine Primera División, the top flight of Argentine football. Home matches are played at Estadio Presidente Perón, nicknamed El Cilindro for its cylindrical shape, a venue that stands on the site of the club's former Alsina y Colón ground. Racing is traditionally counted among Argentina's "Big Five" clubs, alongside Boca Juniors, River Plate, San Lorenzo, and Independiente.

Beyond football, Racing supports a wide range of sports, including basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball, making it a true multi-sport club. The football team's trophy cabinet is impressive: 18 Primera División titles, including a world-record streak of seven consecutive championships from 1913 to 1919, five of them unbeaten. That feat made Racing the first club in the world to achieve such a run, and it remains the only one in the Americas. Racing Club's story begins on March 25, 1903, when a group of young men in Avellaneda merged local youth clubs to form a new institution. The club quickly made its mark, and between 1913 and 1919 it achieved something no other club in the Americas has matched: seven consecutive Primera División titles, five of them without a single loss. That run, a world record at the time, earned the team the nickname "La Academia" because their methodical, technical style set the academic standard for how football should be played. The streak also made Racing the first club anywhere to win seven straight top-flight championships, a feat that still stands as a continental record.

The 1960s brought Racing its crowning glory. In 1967, under the leadership of coach Juan José Pizzuti, the club won the Copa Libertadores, defeating Nacional of Uruguay in the final. Later that year, they traveled to Montevideo to face Celtic of Scotland in the Intercontinental Cup. Racing won both legs, 1-0 and 2-1, becoming the first Argentine club to claim a world championship. That squad, featuring players like Norberto Raffo and Humberto Maschio, remains a touchstone of the club's identity.

After decades of domestic success, Racing entered a period of decline in the 1980s and 1990s, even suffering relegation in 1983. But the club bounced back, and the new millennium brought renewed ambition. In 2014, under coach Diego Cocca, Racing won the Argentine Primera División, its first league title in 13 years. The real resurgence came in the 2020s. In 2024, Gustavo Costas, a former Racing defender and lifelong fan, led the club to the Copa Sudamericana title, beating Cruzeiro 3-1 in the final. That triumph was followed by the 2025 Recopa Sudamericana, a 4-3 aggregate victory over Botafogo.
