Qantas Airways

Qantas Airways Limited, the flag carrier of Australia, began in the Queensland outback on November 16, 1920. The name comes from its original title, Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services, a nod to its early days flying to remote communities. Today it is the oldest continuously operating airline in the English-speaking world and the largest carrier in Oceania by fleet size and international reach. Its network spans all seven continents, connecting more than 100 destinations.

The airline operates under two brands: Qantas for full-service premium travel and Jetstar for low-cost flights. Together they offer over 7,300 weekly flights across domestic and international routes. Qantas is a founding member of the oneworld Alliance, and partnerships with carriers like American Airlines extend its network to more than 1,000 destinations worldwide. The Qantas Group also leads Australia's air freight sector, moving everything from fresh produce to specialized cargo.

Recent years have brought both innovation and turbulence. The airline launched Project Sunrise, its ultra-long-haul program, and in August 2026 revealed 11 new nonstop routes including 18-hour flights. But operational missteps, like the three-day stranding of passengers in Johannesburg, have tested its reputation.
