    PVR Cinemas began as a single-screen theater called Priya Cinema in Vasant Vihar, Delhi, purchased by Ajay Bijli's father in 1978. Ajay Bijli took over in 1988 and revamped the hall in 1990, then formally incorporated the company in April 1995 as Priya Village Roadshow Ltd., a joint venture with Australia's Village Roadshow Limited. In 1997, PVR opened India's first modern multiplex at Saket, New Delhi, launching the country's multiplex revolution. When Village Roadshow exited in 2003, ICICI Ventures infused ₹40 crore, and the company was renamed PVR Limited.

    In March 2023, PVR merged with INOX Leisure Limited to form PVR INOX Limited, creating India's largest cinema exhibition chain. As of May 2025, the combined entity operates 1,743 screens across 352 properties in 111 cities in India and Sri Lanka. The company offers standard screens, IMAX, 4DX, and luxury formats, and has diversified into screening global cultural events such as the BTS World Tour 'Arirang' in April 2026. PVR's brand identity is built around its purple color scheme and the tagline 'For the Love of Cinema'.
