Bryan Fuller created a world where death is merely a temporary inconvenience for the right person. The show operates on strict magical rules: a young man named Ned can bring dead things back to life by touching them, but if he touches them again they die forever. They recruit Emerson Cod, a gambling-addicted private investigator, to help investigate crimes without breaking the rules.

Every episode presents a new mystery involving quirky characters like Olive Snook, a psychic who communicates with the dead through her hair. The central tension arises from the one-hour rule: reanimated beings must return to their original place of death or perish permanently. This constraint creates a high-stakes atmosphere where every investigation is a race against time. Season 1 focuses heavily on the romance between Ned and Chuck as they navigate the impossibility of a physical relationship due to Ned's power.

Season 2 shifts the tone from standalone mysteries to a serialized narrative arc. With the immediate threat of the killer looming closer, the characters face deeper personal challenges.
