Pro Evolution Soccer 2013
"Full control, total freedom"
Overview
Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 (PES 2013, known as World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2013 in Japan and South Korea) is an association football video game developed and published by Konami. Announced on April 18, 2012, it hit shelves on September 20 of that year for a wide range of platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Android, and iOS. This release marked a significant milestone for the series: for the first time, all 20 clubs from Brazil's Campeonato Brasileiro Série A were fully licensed, adding a fresh layer of authenticity for South American football fans. The game also retained the official licenses for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, letting players experience the drama of Europe's premier club competitions.
On the pitch, PES 2013 refined the series' signature gameplay with the new PES FullControl system, which gave players unprecedented command over shooting, passing, and dribbling. The right analog stick allowed for manual shots and through balls, rewarding precision and creativity. The game's AI was also tweaked, with smarter off-the-ball movement and more responsive defending, making each match feel both challenging and rewarding. While the graphics and presentation weren't a massive leap over its predecessor, the gameplay improvements were enough to earn praise from critics and players alike.
This was also a bittersweet moment for the franchise: PES 2013 was the last entry to appear on a Nintendo home console, marking the end of an era for Wii owners. It was succeeded by Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, which shifted to the Fox Engine and a new generation of hardware. For many, PES 2013 remains a high-water mark for the series' gameplay, a polished and responsive football sim that still holds up today.
Gameplay
PES 2013's headline feature was the PES FullControl system, which gave players manual control over almost every action. The right analog stick handled manual shots and through balls, letting you place the ball with pinpoint accuracy. Dribbling was revamped with new close-control moves, and the AI was improved to make off-the-ball runs and defensive positioning more intelligent. The game also emphasized replicating the individual styles of star players, so Cristiano Ronaldo's step-overs and Messi's low-center-of-gravity dribbles felt distinct. For the first time, all 20 clubs from Brazil's Série A were fully licensed, adding a new flavor to the Master League and exhibition matches. The UEFA Champions League and Europa League modes returned with authentic presentation, and Become a Legend let you guide a single player's career from youth to retirement.
Story
PES 2013 didn't have a traditional story mode. The closest thing to a narrative was Become a Legend, where you created a player and guided their career through multiple seasons, making choices about transfers and training. The Master League mode offered a team-management experience, leading a club through league and cup competitions over several years. Off the pitch, the game's presentation was anchored by English commentary from Jon Champion and Jim Beglin, who called matches with a level of detail that added to the immersion.
