    Overview

Set in early 19th-century England, Jane Austen's novel centers on the Bennet family of Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five unmarried daughters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. Because the estate is entailed to a male heir, Mrs. Bennet is determined to see her daughters married to wealthy men. The arrival of wealthy bachelor Mr. Charles Bingley at nearby Netherfield Park sparks excitement, and he brings with him his proud friend Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. At a local ball, Darcy refuses to dance with Elizabeth, declaring her 'tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me.' Elizabeth overhears and develops a strong prejudice against him.

The plot deepens as Elizabeth meets the charming but duplicitous Mr. George Wickham, who tells her a fabricated tale of Darcy's mistreatment. Mr. Collins, the Bennets' pompous cousin, proposes to Elizabeth, but she refuses. Collins then marries her friend Charlotte Lucas. When Elizabeth visits Charlotte at Rosings Park, she encounters Darcy, who proposes marriage despite his concerns about her social standing. Elizabeth angrily rejects him, accusing him of arrogance and ruining Jane's happiness. Darcy's letter reveals the truth about Wickham and his reasons for separating Jane and Bingley, forcing Elizabeth to confront her own prejudices.

Their paths cross again at Pemberley, Darcy's estate, where Elizabeth sees his generous side. Their relationship evolves amid family crises, including Lydia's scandalous elopement with Wickham, which Darcy secretly resolves. Both characters overcome their pride and prejudice, leading to a double marriage: Jane marries Bingley, and Elizabeth marries Darcy. The novel concludes with a satisfying resolution for the main characters.
