About
PREM Rugby, officially known as the Gallagher PREM, is the highest level of professional rugby union in England. The competition features 10 clubs battling through a regular season and playoffs to be crowned champions. It is one of the three elite professional leagues in the Northern Hemisphere, alongside France's Top 14 and the cross-border United Rugby Championship.
Founded in 1987 as National Division One, the league has undergone several rebrandings, becoming Premiership Rugby in 2000 and then PREM Rugby in 2025. The season typically runs from September to June, with each team playing 18 regular-season matches. The top four teams advance to the semifinals and final, held at a neutral venue like Twickenham Stadium.
Premiership clubs also qualify for European competitions: the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup. The league has a rich history of intense rivalries, passionate fanbases, and producing world-class players. Leicester Tigers hold the record for most titles with 11, while Bath and Saracens have six each.
History
The competition began in 1987 as National Division One, replacing the previous county-based system. It was organized by the Rugby Football Union until 1997, when the clubs formed English First Division Rugby Ltd to take control. The league was rebranded as Premiership 1 for the 1997-98 season and then Premiership Rugby from 2000-01.
A major milestone came in 2003 when the playoff system was introduced to determine the champion, replacing the simple league table. This change was designed to keep the season exciting despite the disruption of the Six Nations. In 2010, the league expanded to 12 teams, and by 2017 it had grown to 13. However, financial difficulties led to the collapse of Wasps, Worcester Warriors, and London Irish in 2022-23, reducing the league to 10 teams.
The 2025 rebranding to PREM Rugby marked a new era, with a refreshed logo and increased broadcast coverage. The league has also experimented with overseas matches, including a 2016 game in the United States between London Irish and Saracens.

Cultural Impact
Premiership Rugby is the pinnacle of English club rugby and has a passionate following, especially in the Midlands and South West. The league has produced numerous England internationals and has been a key driver in the professionalization of the sport. Events like Harlequins' Big Game at Twickenham and Saracens' Showdown have become annual highlights, drawing large crowds and showcasing the sport's entertainment value.
The league's influence extends beyond England, with its clubs regularly competing in European competitions. The Premiership's style of play, often characterized by physicality and tactical kicking, has shaped the way rugby is played in the Northern Hemisphere. The league also contributes to community programs through the Premiership Rugby Shield and grassroots initiatives.
Controversies
The most significant controversy in Premiership Rugby's history came during the 2022-23 season when three clubs—Wasps, Worcester Warriors, and London Irish—entered administration and were relegated or expelled. The financial collapses were attributed to unsustainable spending and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The league contracted from 13 to 10 teams, leading to criticism of the league's financial governance and salary cap rules.
Saracens were also embroiled in a salary cap scandal in 2019, when they were found to have breached the cap over multiple seasons. They were relegated to the Championship for the 2020-21 season, though they returned to the Premiership after one year.
