Powerball

Powerball is a multi-state lottery game operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), a nonprofit, government-benefiting organization owned by its member state lotteries. Launched on April 19, 1992, Powerball replaced the earlier Lotto America game and quickly became one of the most recognizable lottery brands in the United States. Available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the United Kingdom, Powerball holds drawings three times weekly on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time from the Florida Lottery's headquarters in Tallahassee.

The game structure requires players to select five white balls from a pool of 69 and one red Powerball from a pool of 26. The odds of winning the jackpot stand at roughly 1 in 292 million. Powerball has produced some of the largest lottery prizes in history, including a record $2.04 billion jackpot in November 2022 and a $1.586 billion prize in January 2016. Net proceeds from ticket sales are distributed to state-designated beneficiary programs, primarily funding education, infrastructure, and senior services.

Powerball operates through a network of approximately 200,000 retail locations across participating jurisdictions. The game offers a Power Play multiplier option, introduced in 2001, which can increase non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times. While largely an American institution, Powerball expanded to the United Kingdom in 2015, making it the only non-U.S. jurisdiction to offer the game. The Multi-State Lottery Association was founded in 1987 by six state lotteries: Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. Their goal was to pool resources to offer larger jackpots than any single state could provide. The first product was Lotto America, launched in 1988, but it struggled to generate the excitement needed to compete with emerging games. In 1992, MUSL replaced Lotto America with Powerball, a new game featuring a double-matrix format that allowed for bigger jackpots and faster roll growth. Powerball's initial format used 5 white balls from 45 and 1 red ball from 45, with odds of 1 in 55 million.

Throughout the 1990s, Powerball expanded steadily as more state lotteries joined MUSL. By 1997, the game was available in 20 states. The first jackpot to exceed $300 million was hit in 2001, and the game's popularity surged. In 2009, Powerball introduced the Power Play option, allowing players to multiply non-jackpot prizes for an extra dollar. The game underwent significant format changes in 2012, switching to 5/59 and 1/35, which increased jackpot odds to 1 in 175 million. A further change in 2015 to the current 5/69 and 1/26 format pushed odds to 1 in 292 million, but also enabled larger jackpots to grow faster. That same year, the United Kingdom became the first non-U.S. jurisdiction to offer Powerball.

The 2010s saw a series of record-breaking jackpots. In January 2016, a $1.586 billion prize was split among winners in California, Florida, and Tennessee. In November 2022, a single ticket sold in Altadena, California, won a record $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest lottery prize ever awarded. The winner, Edwin Castro, faced a legal challenge from a man claiming the ticket was stolen, but courts ruled in Castro's favor. In 2023, a controversy arose when a Los Angeles store owner allegedly tried to claim a winning ticket sold at his establishment. Powerball drawings increased from twice weekly to three times per week in 2021, adding Monday to the existing Wednesday and Saturday schedule. [edit]
