The Portland Trail Blazers entered the NBA as an expansion team in 1970 after local promoter Harry Glickman secured financing and community backing. A name-the-team contest produced Trail Blazers, a nod to the pioneers who settled the Oregon Trail. The club played its first season in 1970-71 at Memorial Coliseum and endured early growing pains before selecting center Bill Walton with the top pick in the 1974 draft.

Under coach Jack Ramsay the 1976-77 squad posted a 49-33 record and stormed through the playoffs. They overcame a 0-2 deficit against the Philadelphia 76ers to capture the 1977 NBA title in six games. That championship remains the franchise's only league crown and cemented a special bond between team and city. A remarkable 814-game sellout streak began that year and lasted until 1995.

The 1980s and early 1990s brought more success after the team drafted Clyde Drexler in 1983. Portland reached the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992 but fell short both times. Later teams featuring Rasheed Wallace earned the unflattering Jail Blazers label due to off-court troubles yet still came close to another Finals trip in 2000. The mid-2000s offered renewed hope with Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Greg Oden before injuries derailed those plans.

Damian Lillard arrived via the 2012 draft and became the face of the franchise for over a decade. His clutch performances included a series-winning three-pointer against Houston in 2014 and a trip to the 2019 Western Conference Finals. The Blazers traded Lillard in 2023 and began a youth-focused rebuild centered on players such as Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe.
